In ancient Lapland, a young boy named Nikolas loses his family in a tragic accident. The villagers take him in, and he moves to a new home every year at Christmas. To express his gratitude, Nikolas makes toys for the children in each new family, leaving them as goodbye gifts. As the years pass, Nikolas's adoptive families multiply, and soon every house receives presents on Christmas morning. At 13, Nikolas is sent to live with Iisakki, a gruff old carpenter who forbids him from continuing the tradition. However, Nikolas wins Iisakki's trust, and together they preserve the Christmas custom. When Iisakki leaves, Nikolas finds a way to ensure children's joy every Christmas, a tradition that continues to this day.
