Children of Hiroshima background

Children of Hiroshima

In post-war Hiroshima, Takako returns to her hometown after a four-year absence, confronting the lingering effects of the A-bomb as she visits old friends scattered throughout the city.

Takako Ishikawa, a school teacher, returns to Hiroshima six years after the atomic bombing to visit friends and honor her parents who perished in the tragedy. She stays with her friend Natsue Morikawa, who is infertile due to the A-bomb's side effects. While exploring the devastated city, Takako encounters a former family friend, Iwakichi, who is now almost blind and a beggar. She discovers his grandson, Taro, is living in an orphanage, as Iwakichi's shanty is unsuitable for raising a child.
