In 1940s Vietnam, during the French occupation, the lush southern coast is a realm of contrasts, where life-giving water coexists with decay and rot. For 15-year-old Kim, the struggle for survival is a daily reality. His family's two buffalo, their livelihood as rice farmers, are struggling to find food during the rainy season. With a sense of responsibility, Kim decides to take the beasts inland in search of sustenance.
