In the aftermath of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, the Shizuma family navigates the devastation alongside their niece Yasuko. Five years later, they reside in a village inhabited by survivors, where Yasuko's grandmother struggles with senility. Despite Yasuko's apparent immunity, her aunt and uncle fret about her marriage prospects due to the looming threat of radiation sickness.
