In 1962 Parma, a 20-year-old student named Fabrizio grapples with his Marxist beliefs and his parents' upper-class lifestyle. As he prepares to marry his wealthy and beautiful but apolitical girlfriend, Clelia, Fabrizio is haunted by the death of a close friend and finds himself drawn to his refined but troubled aunt, Gina.
