Malayalam-speaking friends T.K., Rajat, Manas, and Sajani live in Kerala, India, during the British Raj. As children, they played in the woods, with Manas and T.K. pretending to be Bhagwan Shri Ram and Shri Lakshman, respectively. Now, they're grown up, with Manas working as a laborer, Sajani married to Rajat, and T.K. employed by his British boss, Henry Moores. Sajani is also a maid in the Moores' household. T.K.'s headmaster asks him to join the freedom movement, but T.K. disagrees, believing India has made progress under British rule. His headmaster warns him that partnership is only between equals, but T.K. ignores this, until he discovers Henry's affair with Sajani, forcing him to re-examine his views.
