Barefoot in Athens background

Barefoot in Athens

The film explores the final days of Socrates' life, culminating in his infamous trial, as he faces charges of impiety and corruption of youth.

Socrates, a nonconformist philosopher, is a dedicated teacher to his students without pay, despite his wife's objections. He's viewed as a corrupter of youth by the establishment and is charged with heresy and treason. However, his trial is suspended due to the Peloponnesian War ending and Spartan occupation of Athens. The Spartan King Pausanias is impressed by Socrates and offers him booty and escape, but Socrates refuses and convinces the King to restore Athenian democracy.
