A successful Government minister, Sir Robert Chiltern, is threatened when a woman named Mrs. Cheveley appears with evidence of his past wrongdoing, putting his wealth and loving marriage at risk. He seeks help from his friend Lord Goring, a charming but seemingly idle playboy, who knows Mrs. Cheveley from the past and takes the situation very seriously.
