In 18th century Russia, Lieutenant Alexei Chernoff, a naive and idealistic officer, deserts his unit to warn Empress Catherine the Great of impending dangers. He forces his way into the palace, where he meets Chancellor Nicolai Iiyitch and his fiancée, Countess Anna, a lady-in-waiting. Impressed by Chernoff's sense of sacrifice and good looks, Empress Catherine makes him her favorite, appointing him to various high-ranking positions in the Imperial Guard.
