The story is narrated by John-Boy, the eldest son, who aspires to be a novelist and eventually achieves his dream. The series explores the family's journey through the economic struggles of the Great Depression and World War II, as well as the milestones of growing up, education, romance, work, parenthood, aging, illness, and loss.
