Romeo, an 11-year-old boy living in poverty in a small village in Switzerland, sells himself into slavery to afford medical treatment for his sick father. An evil man named Ruini pays money for Romeo and takes him far away to Milan where he becomes a chimney sweep. Despite the hardships of life in Milan, including mistreatment by his master's family, Romeo finds joy with his best friend Alfred and other chimney boys through their shared love of chimneys. Together, they form the "Black Brothers" group.
