James Beck, known for his role as Private Walker in "Dad's Army," was initially intended as a comedy vehicle for the series' star. Bert Jones and his wife Betty live on a caravan site during an economic crisis-hit 1970s Britain. Betty is shocked by her daughter's living conditions, believing she leads a luxurious life instead of squalor. Wally tells them about his pet chicken Florey, and the series follows the misadventures of Bert and his neighbors, including Wally and Lily Briggs (Arthur Mullard and Queenie Watts). The family has laidback lifestyles, often sparring with each other. In series three, after Beck's untimely death, two new characters were introduced: Jeremy and Susan Crichton-Jones. Arthur Mullard and Queenie Watts later went on to create their own spin-off show titled "Yus, My Dear."
