The RAF Hornet Squadron men, transferred to France during World War II's outbreak in September 1939, were generally competent pilots but faced limited combat activity initially. They spent much of their time engaging in dangerous stunts or courting local women. The phony war ended in April 1940, leading to the Battle of Britain. By September that year, only a few remained, despite their success; they neither considered themselves heroes nor did many seek recognition for their efforts.
