Balki Bartokomous, a sheepherder from the Mediterranean island of Mypos, travels to the United States to find his relatives. He discovers his cousin Larry Appleton, who has recently escaped his large family and is enjoying the luxury of having his own room. Despite their vastly different personalities, they share an apartment, with Balki's placid and idealistic nature clashing with Larry's panicky and mercenary approach.
