A 15-year-old scavenger named Maria lives on the outskirts of the city. She loses her godmother, who requests that the local priest not leave Maria alone since she has been begging him for assistance in the past. The priest agrees to help by asking one of his benefactors to take care of Maria as a servant in his house instead. However, Don Fernando takes advantage of this situation, bringing Maria into his household as a ward, which makes her the target of hostility from his wife, Victoria, and niece Soraya. Maria falls deeply in love with Luis Fernando, who is both dashing and disorderly but also drunk at times. She must fight for his affections against Soraya. Later, Penelope takes on the role of nanny to Maria and her adopted child Tita, causing constant trouble for Maria and Luis Fernando.
