British industrialist Bill Rutland arrives in Tokyo two days early for the 1964 Summer Olympics and struggles to find a hotel room. He spots an ad for a sublet room and secures the sitting room of Christine Easton's one-bedroom apartment. Despite Christine's initial reluctance, Bill and American athlete Steve Davis move in, unbeknownst to Christine's fiancé, Julius. As Bill and Steve become fast friends, Christine and Steve develop feelings for each other, leading Bill to encourage their relationship and try to get Julius out of the way.
