The film Hakuchû no tôrima is a portrayal of a violent rapist as seen through the perspectives of his wife and one of his victims. The story begins with Eisuke, who encounters Shino, a former coworker from a failed collective farm, and saves her life only to later rape her. As Eisuke's criminal pattern of rapes and murders emerges, Shino witnesses one of his attacks and decides to withhold her knowledge of his identity from the police. Instead, she writes letters to Eisuke's wife, Matsuko, a schoolteacher, to expose his true nature and potentially induce her to turn him in.
