In feudal Japan, a family man and craftsman, Genjurô, makes a fortune selling wares in Nagahama. His neighbor, Tobei, a dreamer, longs to become a samurai, but lacks the necessary outfit. Despite warnings from their wives, Genjurô and Tobei collaborate to create clay potteries, hoping to sell them and become rich. However, their village is looted, and they flee, eventually deciding to travel by boat to sell their wares in a larger town. After meeting another boat attacked by pirates, Genjurô abandons his wife and child, promising to return in ten days. Meanwhile, Tobei leaves his wife to pursue his samurai dreams, and Genjurô becomes embroiled in the luxurious world of Lady Wakasa, a female aristocrat.
