The film depicts the alleged UFO abduction of Betty and Barney Hill through memory flashbacks accessed by hypnotic regression, recounting their experience on September 19, 1961 in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After returning from a trip to Canada, the Hills, a social services worker and a postal employee, are haunted by anxiety and disturbing visions. They seek the help of Dr. Benjamin Simon to uncover the truth about that fateful night, and their independent accounts reveal a bizarre and unearthly tale.
