In 1949 Hong Kong, an American woman, Carolyn, and a French shipping executive, Paul, are having an affair while being married to others. Carolyn's marriage to a British doctor, Walter, was based on ego repair, not love. When Walter confronts her about the affair, Carolyn is forced to choose between her husband and her lover. She agrees to move to rural China with Walter, where a cholera outbreak is occurring, to take his mind off their marital problems. There, they meet a kind-hearted acquaintance, Tim, who helps Carolyn see her marriage and herself in a new light. However, it may be too late for them to reconcile due to Walter's disdain for Carolyn's infidelity.
