Fifteen years after leading a daring raid that repelled an extraterrestrial invasion, Colonel John Robinson is honored with a grand ceremony and retires from active duty. He then signs his family up for a colonization mission to a newly discovered star system, hoping to mend his relationships with them. However, during the journey, the mothership is ambushed by the same aliens he defeated years ago. As the aliens board the ship, John and pilot Major Don West detach the Robinsons' escape pod and flee through a nearby wormhole, becoming lost in space.
