In 1939, a young army nurse named Sakura Nishi is deployed to field hospitals in China during the Sino-Japanese war, where she helps Dr. Okabe perform a high volume of amputations. Despite the chaos, Sakura shows compassion to the wounded soldiers, including one who has lost both arms and has lost all hope of returning home. Her sympathy ultimately leads her to fall in love with Dr. Okabe, although his addiction to morphine has left him impotent.
