In 1920s Algiers, a rabbi's life is turned upside down when his daughter Zlabya reaches adolescence and his cat, which has been killing parrots, suddenly gains the ability to talk. Complications arise when a painter, discovered in a Russian box, joins the group on a quest for a mythical African city.
