In the late 19th century, British Major Rudolf Rassendyll is on a fishing vacation in central Europe, unaware of the coronation of Rudolf V, his distant cousin, the next day. After a chance encounter with Rudolf V and his advisors, Rassendyll discovers they could be twins and agrees to masquerade as the future king at the coronation. However, Michael, Rudolf's half-brother, plans to use his brother's irresponsible behavior to claim the throne. Meanwhile, Antoinette, Michael's girlfriend, doesn't want him to be king, and Rupert, another operative, is in love with her. As Rassendyll poses as his cousin, he falls in love with Princess Flavia, who has a duty-bound relationship with Rudolf.
