In 1848, Frenchwoman Madeline Minot travels to New York City to visit Thevenet, her fiancé's grandfather, a man with ties to Napoleon. She finds him in poor spirits, living with a housekeeper and butler who are eager for him to pass away so they can inherit his wealth. The pair sees Madeline as a threat to their plans, but she finds an ally in a mysterious figure clad in a cloak.
