A former prosecutor, Stephen Forbes, leaves his job after an innocent boy is wrongly convicted, only to discover the true culprit's confession too late. He starts a small law firm and is aided by his loyal secretary, Joan Reed.

Stephen Forbes, a skilled lawyer, leaves his DA job after an innocent man is wrongly convicted and the real killer confesses too late. He starts a new law firm with his secretary Joan Reed, but struggles until partnering with J.B. Roscoe, a contact between city hall and organized crime. Forbes' brother John joins the firm and falls in love with colleague Celia, but soon discovers the firm's corrupt dealings and wants to cut ties with Roscoe. However, Roscoe frames John for murder and he is sentenced to death row.
