In the American West, a former prisoner, Jay Grobart, leads a group of outlaws in a daring train robbery. After capturing a wealthy woman, Catherine, they're forced to take her along as they flee. As they journey together, Jay and Catherine grow closer, but their budding romance is threatened by the band's selfish desires and the danger of being caught by the pursuing posse, led by investigator Harvey Lapchance and Catherine's husband, Willard Crocker.
