In a New England town, Frank Skeffington, a successful and aging politician, runs his fifth and final campaign for Mayor. Despite his popularity among the Irish immigrant community, he faces opposition from wealthy elite and those who see him as corrupt. Frank's own son is apathetic about politics, and his nephew, Adam Caulfield, is torn between supporting his uncle and his wife's negative views. As Frank's campaign manager, Adam's boss, Amos Force, opposes Frank and promotes his opponent, Kevin McCluskey, despite McCluskey's inexperience. Frank brings Adam on board as a journalist to document his campaign and adapt to the changing times, including the growing influence of television and radio.
