A young woman, Iris Carr, returns home from the Balkans in the 1930s and boards a train, where she befriends a kind governess named Miss Froy. However, after a blow to the head, Miss Froy mysteriously disappears, and everyone denies ever seeing her, leading Iris to question her own sanity. Only a language student named Max Hare shows empathy, but even he has doubts. As Iris searches for the truth, she is thwarted by a German woman who is masquerading as Miss Froy, and Max unwittingly becomes entangled in the deceit.
