In 14th century Korea, minstrels Jang-sang and Gong-gil perform bawdy stories as a tightrope act to make a living. However, their success is threatened by the rich who become obsessed with Gong-gil's androgynous looks. After a line is crossed, they flee to Seoul and join a trio of fellow minstrels, presenting riskier shows that prove lucrative. But, a satirical performance puts them under arrest and they are forced to present themselves to the king. Surprisingly, they become his court performers, but the king's infatuation with Gong-gil and his buried issues over his dead mother make him unstable.
