In November 1940, John "Kit" McKittrick, a retired NYPD officer's son, returns to New York City after reading about the death of his friend and rescuer, Police Lieutenant Louie Lepetino. Kit believes Louie's death is connected to his own imprisonment in Spain and begins his own investigation, suspecting everyone at the party where Louie died, including his former girlfriend, friends, and even the police inspector. As Kit digs deeper, he becomes increasingly unsure of what is real and what is just his troubled imagination, especially when he starts to hear the same labored footsteps he experienced during his tortures in the POW camp.
