In a small Andalusian town, Higinio, a tailor and councilor, hides from Franco's soldiers after the Spanish Civil War breaks out. He escapes and returns to his house, where he remains hidden in a secret hole. Meanwhile, his wife Rosa takes charge of his father's sewing shop and is eventually raped by a young Civil Guard. Higinio kills the guard and buries his body, and Rosa becomes pregnant. She abandons Higinio for a few months to hide her pregnancy, and when she returns, she and Higinio's relationship deteriorates due to their isolation and guilt. Years pass, and Higinio's hopes for the Allied forces defeating Franco's regime fade. In 1963, their son Jaime grows up and becomes an idealistic young man, tired of living in fear. He introduces his father to others who are also hiding, and Gonzalo, still seeking revenge, continues to visit Rosa's sewing shop. In 1969, Higinio's life changes after hearing a special news on the radio.
