In 18th century Spain, a beggar arrives at a castle on his wedding day, only to be imprisoned by a cruel marquis. The mute daughter of the jailer secretly feeds him for years, eventually growing up and escaping her attempted rape by the marquis. She flees to the forest, where she is found by Don Alfredo and brought back home. She gives birth to a boy, Leon, but dies soon after. Don Alfredo and his servant, Teresa, raise Leon, who grows up with a mysterious curse. The local priest advises that Leon must be raised with love to overcome his fate.
