In occupied France during World War II, Marie Latour, a resourceful woman with limited education, navigates the challenges of raising two children in a cramped apartment. When her husband Paul returns from German captivity, struggling to find employment, Marie turns to a lucrative alternative: performing abortions using a homemade douche. As her clients are mostly German soldiers, she uses the income to improve her family's living conditions and even considers moving to a new apartment. Meanwhile, she begins renting out her bedrooms to prostitutes during the day, thanks to an acquaintance in the trade. Despite her husband's growing humiliations, Marie remains indifferent, focusing on her own aspirations to become a singer. However, the moral hypocrisy of the Vichy regime and its male authorities threatens to upend her newfound independence and success.
