The post-civil war era in Walesburg, a frontier town, is marked by the arrival of Josiah Gray, who becomes the town's moral center despite having no formal religious background. He, his wife Harriet, and their ward John Kenyon, who recounts their story decades later, face challenges as Josiah tries to bring harmony to the town. Not everyone agrees with him, including farmer Jed Isbell who refuses to attend church services and young Doc Harris who doesn't believe in the role of religion in healthcare. As typhoid spreads, the parson must provide comfort to his parishioners while also helping freed former slave Uncle Famous Prill, who is threatened by store owner Lon Backett's attempts to take his land.
