A poor sailor finds employment with a solitary woman who operates a modest fur trimming business. They wed, and eventually, a child is born, but his infidelity leads to devastating outcomes.

Madame Valerie, a San Francisco furrier, is a shrewd businesswoman who falls for Tim O'Hara, a sailor with a reputation for being unreliable. Despite his lack of value to her business, she hires and eventually marries him. Unbeknownst to her, Tim is a chronic philanderer, using her until he can return to the sea. Their marriage faces ups and downs as Bertha discovers Tim's infidelity and meets one of his former lovers, Marguerite Gilbert, who is unaware of Tim's marriage to Bertha and his current whereabouts.
