In the film, Charlie finds himself in an unconventional boot camp, only to face disappointment when he receives no letters from home while stationed in France. His situation takes a turn when he receives a package containing limburger cheese, which he decides to use to his advantage by throwing it into the German trenches. Emboldened by his actions, Charlie takes on the enemy, capturing 13 Germans in the process. He then volunteers to infiltrate German lines by disguising himself as a tree trunk, with the help of a French girl. Charlie's daring mission culminates in the capture of the Kaiser and the Crown Prince. His heroics are celebrated with a statue and victory parade in New York, only to be interrupted by his fellow soldiers, who reveal that it was all just a dream.
