Idealistic refugee Henry Wong fled China's Cultural Revolution and built a new life in Hong Kong, becoming a wealthy banker with political ambitions. He's now having an affair with a married Englishwoman and seeks to acquire a local newspaper to influence Chinese politics. Meanwhile, a Japanese journalist befriends his former lover, a nightclub singer, to uncover Henry's past, just as Hong Kong is about to return to China and student protests erupt in Beijing.
