A young boy, separated from his carpenter father in Kudan, is taken in by Tashiro, a resident of a Tokyo tenement complex. Despite Tashiro's willingness to care for the boy, the tenement's head, Tamekichi, refuses to let him stay. The boy is then passed on to their neighbor, Tane, a widowed woman who treats him poorly. As Tane searches for the boy's father in Chigasaki, she discovers that he abandoned his son to find work. However, when there is a chance she may lose the boy forever, her attitude towards him undergoes a dramatic shift.
