In 1962 Calcutta, three families live in an upper-middle-class neighborhood. Gurcharan, a retired man, struggles to make ends meet and mortgages his house to his neighbor Navinchandra Roy. Navinchandra offers Gurcharan's daughter Lalita a job to help the family survive. However, Navinchandra's son Shekhar and Lalita develop feelings for each other, which Navinchandra disapproves of. The situation becomes more complicated when Girish, a wealthy businessman, returns home and falls in love with Lalita.
