In the small Irish town of Middletown, a young boy named Gabriel is told by his father and a preacher that he is chosen by God for a special purpose. Years later, Gabriel returns as the new preacher, but finds the town consumed by drinking and gambling. His brother Jim and sister-in-law Caroline, who run the local pub, are no exceptions.
