Mary Magdalene, cast out by her husband Amos, befriends Roman prefect Silvano and meets John the Baptist, who teaches her about the coming Messiah. As Silvano becomes suspicious of John's revolutionary views, Mary pretends he's harmless to protect him. When Silvano discovers the truth, he casts her out too. Mary turns to prostitution before being invited to Herod Antipas' court by his wife Herodias. There, she meets Salome and becomes embroiled in the war for Galilee. After her home town of Magdala burns down, Mary's friend Joanna's son Samuel dies, but Jesus brings him back to life. Recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, Mary becomes one of his disciples.

Amos's marriage to Mary Magdalene ends in divorce when they remain childless, leading him to expel her from their home in Magdala. Mary finds solace in a new friendship with Silvano, a Roman prefect, who offers her a fresh start by his side.
