Juana's parents, the Catholic kings Ferndinand and Isabella, arrange her marriage to Philip, the son of Archduke Maximilian, to unite Spain with the Habsburg heritage. Initially, Juana falls deeply in love with Philip, but she soon discovers he has multiple partners, including a Moorish princess. When Juana's family members die, she becomes the heir, but her father Ferdinand suspects she may inherit her grandmother's madness and supports Philip's ambition to rule instead. This sets the stage for a power struggle in the Cortes, with Philip's infidelity and Juana's inheritance at the center of the drama.
