Madame Rosa, a former prostitute and Auschwitz survivor, runs a small foster home for children of sex workers in a Parisian apartment. She takes in Momo, an Algerian boy, and raises him as a Muslim, keeping his parents' identity a secret. As she ages and takes in fewer children, Momo becomes more responsible, earning money by performing with a puppet on the street. He also catches the eye of Nadine, a film editor, who becomes his friend. Meanwhile, Momo's father suddenly reappears, and Madame Rosa's fear of hospitals intensifies as she approaches the end of her life.
