In rural Czechoslovakia, a factory manager negotiates with the army to send men to boost the morale of young female workers, who have been deprived of male company since the local boys were conscripted. The army sends middle-aged reservists, mostly married men, and the local beauty Andula rejects those who try to woo her, instead falling for a jazz pianist who has recently arrived from Prague. The pianist charms her with his unique perspective, telling her that most women are ordinary, but she is a rare beauty, like a Picasso guitar.
