In this retelling of the classic fairy tale, Beauty's family falls into poverty after her father's cargo ships are lost at sea. They move to a rural cottage, where Beauty's father and brothers work hard to make ends meet. After a ship is discovered to have survived, but with no valuable cargo, the family remains poor. One day, Beauty's father gets lost in the forest and finds a magical castle, where he cuts a rose from the gardens, only to be confronted by a terrifying beast who demands that Beauty be sent to die in his place.
