Successful Montréal-based writer Joshua Shapiro faces professional and personal crises, reflecting on his unusual life. Growing up in a working-class Jewish district, his father, Reuben, had multiple careers, some illegal, and his mother, Esther, had a career in performing. Joshua initially wanted to cover the conflict in Spain but ended up in London, where he met writers Sidney Murdoch and Pauline Fraser (née Hornby). Pauline, a left-wing activist, was from a Canadian senator's family and was initially married to Colin Fraser. Joshua fell in love with her and they married, but Pauline struggled with her identity beyond being his wife and mother to their children.
