Joe Maddison, a ship-builder from Tyneside, struggles to find his place in World War II after losing his faith in the trenches of World War I. He joins the Home Guard with his friends, but their anti-authoritarian attitude causes tension with their commander. After being reinstated and promoted to Corporal, Joe meets a widow who helps him heal, but his family is torn apart by his wife's return with a child from a sailor.
