A disillusioned philosophy professor, Abe Lucas, arrives at a small town campus in Newport, Rhode Island, with a reputation for being a womanizer and an alcoholic. Despite his troubled past, Abe is struggling with nihilism and despair, going through the motions in class and drinking excessively. However, he forms a platonic relationship with a bright and attractive student, Jill Pollard, who is hesitant to take their connection further.
