John Bradford's son Jim, a newly minted engineer, shocks his father by announcing his decision to pursue a career in ministry instead. Despite his father's disapproval, Jim enrolls in seminary and later joins the foreign service, assigned to New Guinea. There, he marries Alice, his long-time girlfriend, and they have two children.
